Quest For Something Reel
(or painting places I saw in Crusty Old Films in a School Gym)
In 2021, I received a grant from Canada Council of the Arts to do a cross-country ‘plein air’ painting tour. The locations were to be from 3 NFB films from my childhood. Nahanni, Corral and Paddle-to-the-sea. Corral would take me to the foothills of Alberta, Paddle-to-the-sea the Great Lakes and St Lawrence seaway. Nahanni (which is as yet incomplete) to Nahanni National Park in the Northwest Territories.
During the journey I realized finding the actual filming locations was not going to be possible so instead I sought landscapes that captured the spirit of those films….
